Hourly labour cost in transport
€28.30 (2025) source (opens in a new tab)Eurostat, labour cost levels (lc_lci_lev), 2025 · official statistics

An hour in transport costs €28.30, more than in manufacturing, retail or tourism. Yet many of those hours go on paperwork that already exists digitally: an RFQ email, a CMR as a PDF, a signed proof of delivery.

An office in the Almyros industrial area, near the port of Volos, and one in Heraklion.

The invisible

Four sentences from every dispatch office.

In logistics every minute has a price, and it’s written on the invoice of the competitor who replied first.

The formula

Hidden hours/month = (documents × minutes + calls × 21 × 3 min) ÷ 60 + shift-planning hours × 4.33

Cost/year = hidden hours/month × 12 × hourly cost (+ external cost, where there is one). Automatable = labour cost × department coefficient (0.40–0.75) + external cost × a second coefficient. People = hidden hours/month × coefficient ÷ 150 hours. Payback = pilot cost ÷ (automatable ÷ 12).

The coefficients are our own conservative estimate, shown here so you can challenge them. 150 hours is one person's productive time in a month (≈1,800 a year).

Without the demo: by hand, a quote takes a spreadsheet, two calls, waiting, a fuel calculation and an email. The agent reads the email, prices it from your rate card, asks when unsure, and leaves sending to you.

At one logistics firm, quoting fell from over half an hour to 3 minutes or less (vendor case). We time your own minutes in the X-Ray. source (opens in a new tab)Toptal, logistics case · vendor case

What you saw

The agent doesn’t make prices up. It takes them from your rate card and asks when it isn’t sure.

The Carrier That Answers

The shipper asked an AI. Did it name you?

? groupage from Volos to Germany with ADR

Before: a generic answer, no names

Many carriers run groupage from Greece to Germany. Check whether they hold ADR authorisation and ask more than one for a quote.

After: it names you, citing your lane table

One option is [Your company], based near the port of Volos: weekly groupage to Germany, ADR certification, and transit times published per lane. [1]

Questions

What does AI do in a logistics company?

It drafts quotes from customer emails using your own rate card, reads CMRs, delivery notes and PODs into the TMS, proposes dock slots, documents damage with gate photos, and answers “where’s my load?” on Viber and phone. A person approves whatever goes out.

Will it send prices by itself?

No, unless you decide it should for specific lanes and limits. By default it drafts and waits for approval. Prices come only from your rate card and recent shipments, never from the model.

Does it connect to our TMS and ERP?

Yes. We connect to the TMS, ERP, myDATA and e-invoicing provider you already use, and to the team’s email and Viber. If a system has no API, we say so in the X-Ray and propose the simplest bridge.

How quickly does it pay back?

We measure it rather than promise it. An hour in transport costs €28.30 (Eurostat 2025), so every hour returned is worth more than in manufacturing, retail or tourism. The X-Ray gives payback in months for each opportunity, with the formula on the page.
