Side Roads : 30 platform features that work in your favour, within the rules.

Every platform has a toll motorway and a side road. Ads pay the toll. We look for the side road.

A side road isn't a way round the barrier. It's a feature the platform built itself, one that almost nobody puts to work for their own business: one frame in a Reel, a card in the phone's wallet, a sticker for a friend's name day, an ad that switches itself on when the meltemi blows. Here are 30 of them, each with its source, its rules and an honest estimate.

One road is ours, and real. The other 30 are use cases: how we'd set each one up for you.

Real Netex work Instagram Reels

The coupon in one frame

For a Greek e-shop we made an Instagram Reel of a car driving past. One single frame carried a discount coupon. People stopped the video, rewound, missed and tried again. Watching became a game, the Reel went viral and the client's DMs filled up.

A strip of video frames; one, outlined in orange, hides the code.

Every side road has four parts. In our Reel, they were these:

  1. Feature

Reels loop and stop with a tap. To Meta, a 'view' is every time the Reel plays, and total watch time includes the time spent replaying it. Meta for Developers, Instagram Media Insights · platform documentation (opens in a new tab)

  2. Behaviour

If you almost saw something, you rewind to see it. If you missed it, you send it to a friend: 'Can you find it?'

  3. Bend

Watch time is one of the three main signals Instagram ranks Reels by, alongside likes and sends, and sends count slightly more for people who don't follow you. Every miss was one more replay. The game did the distribution. Adam Mosseri via Social Media Today, 22 Jan 2025 · platform statement (opens in a new tab)

  4. Proof

The code was also the proof: every redemption showed the Reel had sold. The DMs were the till.

The three rules we've kept ever since

  1. The hunt is announced from the first second. A hidden frame nobody is told about would be a subliminal technique, which audiovisual advertising law forbids. Directive 2010/13/EU (AVMSD), Article 9 · EU law (opens in a new tab)
  2. The coupon terms are written down: how long, how many, one use per customer, how to redeem.
  3. The DM reply is designed before the video goes up.

The campaign numbers aren't public yet. They go up as soon as they're cleared for publication.

The roads

30 side roads, checked in October 2026.

Each card says which feature exists, how we turn it to your advantage, where it fits, which rule keeps it legitimate and what to expect. They're use cases: how we'd set each one up for your business.

Reduced motion: you're seeing the final frame.

  1. Side Road 01

    Platform: Instagram

    Test on strangers

    • Reach
    • Attention

The side road A free A/B lab for the first second. We post three or four versions of the same Reel that differ only at the start, and let strangers vote with their time. The winner goes to your followers and becomes the only version you pay to promote.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
Four versions of a Reel are compared on strangers and one wins.
  2. Side Road 02

    Platform: Instagram

    The second cover

    • Reach
    • Attention

The side road One post, two covers. Slide 1 speaks to one audience; slide 2 is a complete, standalone hook for a second audience, not a 'continued →'. Whether the post comes back on slide 2 or someone swipes once, you win a second first impression.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A carousel comes back into the feed starting from its second slide.
  3. Side Road 03

    Platform: Instagram

    One post, six audiences

    • Reach

The side road We find your customer's 'neighbours': businesses that don't compete with you but serve the same person at another point in their day. One shared post, and each partner's audience becomes everyone's, without splitting the engagement.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
As partners are added, audiences merge and reach grows at the same cost.
  4. Side Road 04

    Platform: Instagram + Google Search

The post that ranks on Google

    • Reach
    • Local

The side road Every caption becomes a small landing page. We write the first line the way people search ('bougatsa Heraklion morning near the port'), and the Reel can sit in the results next to the big guides and food-delivery apps for those small, specific searches.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A Reel appears in search results only when its caption opens the way people search.
  5. Side Road 05

    Platform: Instagram

A comment that becomes a conversation

    • Conversion

The side road The public comment, which counts for ranking, becomes a private relationship you own. Instead of 'comment YES', we ask for something useful: 'Tell us your area and we'll message you the nearest stockist.' Every comment gets one reply made for it.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A comment gets a tailored private reply from an assistant that says it is AI.
  6. Side Road 06

    Platform: Instagram Stories

    The blurred Story

    • Attention
    • Conversion

The side road We put what people want to see behind a message. Every reveal is a conversation the customer started, one of the most valuable contacts a brand can earn. We reveal a product or a dish, never a price.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A blurred Story clears when the viewer sends a message.
  7. Side Road 07

    Platform: Instagram

    A chain of friends

    • Reach

The side road The post travels through your customers' friends, not your follower list. We start a prompt people want to answer about themselves, not about the brand, and the brand's prompt stays at the top of every answer.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A chain of Stories spreads from friend to friend and fills a map with pins.
  8. Side Road 08

    Platform: WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram Direct

The message that is a coupon

    • Conversion

The side road The prefilled message becomes the coupon, the tracker and the router in one. Every ad gets its own code ('I'd like offer CRETE-07'). When the customer taps send, they tell you themselves which ad brought them, in which language and for which offer, with no cookies.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
An ad opens a chat with a prefilled message that carries an offer code.
  9. Side Road 09

Platform: Facebook & Instagram (lead forms)

The form that gives a price

    • Conversion

The side road The form becomes a configurator. Three answers are enough for a first estimate, and the customer gets something back for the effort: a price range right after they submit. Fewer leads, but ready for a meeting.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A three-question form adapts its options and returns a price range.
  10. Side Road 10

    Platform: Threads

The post that's answered in your DMs

    • Conversion
    • Reach

The side road An engineer or founder, not a logo, opens a 24-hour question hour: 'Reply with your biggest scrap problem; I'll answer every one personally.' Replies arrive as DMs, so the sales conversation starts in private, on a network where expert voices face little competition.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
Replies to a temporary post go straight to the inbox.
  11. Side Road 11

    Platform: YouTube Shorts

    The loop seam

    • Attention

The side road The closest cousin of our Reel. The last frame matches the first, so the Short loops with no visible cut, and the code is split across the 'seam': half at the end, half at the start. You only read it whole if you watch the loop or stop right on the seam.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A looping Short hides half a code at the end and half at the start.
  12. Side Road 12

    Platform: YouTube + Google Search

    The Shorts back door

    • Conversion
    • Reach

The side road Shorts don't take links, but they do take one door. Behind it we build a corridor: Short → long video → chapters titled exactly as buyers search → a page with a quote form.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A Short leads to a long video whose chapters show up in search.
  13. Side Road 13

    Platform: TikTok

    The coupon on slide 6

    • Attention

The side road Our Reel turned the replay into a game. A carousel turns the swipe back into one. The answer, or the code, hides on the slide most people skip, and anyone who stops there sees it clearly.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A code hides in a detail on the sixth slide of a carousel.
  14. Side Road 14

    Platform: TikTok

    The empty search shelf

    • Reach
    • Local

The side road Nobody can buy the top of a Greek search on TikTok. The shelf isn't auctioned. Videos that answer Greek questions clearly, in Greek and in Greeklish, can take it organically, and the platform itself signals that it wants them.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A Greek search in a video app, where nobody can buy the top spot.
  15. Side Road 15

    Platform: LinkedIn

The invitation LinkedIn sends for you

    • Reach
    • Retention

The side road LinkedIn sends one invitation to your whole network on your behalf, once, then delivers every issue to the inbox. It's an email list you never had to collect. Since the invitation only goes out once, two decisions matter: when, and from whose profile.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A newsletter invitation reaches the whole network once and every issue lands in the inbox.
  16. Side Road 16

    Platform: LinkedIn

Back the engineer, not the logo

    • Attention
    • Reach

The side road The budget goes behind a real person's post, not a logo. In Greek B2B, buyers trust people they know. And with their consent, you can promote a happy customer's post, in their own words, with the promotion label in plain sight.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
An engineer's promoted post outperforms a company render.
  17. Side Road 17

    Platform: Viber

    The name-day sticker

    • Reach
    • Retention

The side road A sticker is an ad people send to each other, for free. And Greece has a multiplier few markets have on this scale: the name day. Someone celebrates every single day, so a pack built for 'Chronia polla' gets used again and again.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A name-day sticker, the disclosed channel subscription and the channel's first post.
  18. Side Road 18

    Platform: Viber

The message that doesn't look like a scam

    • Conversion
    • Retention

The side road A question was tabled in the Greek Parliament (31 March 2026) on the surge of fake texts impersonating banks and couriers. People have learnt not to tap links. The same message, as a verified card with buttons instead of a bare link, reads as legitimate. We start with the messages customers want: 'your parcel is on its way', 'your appointment is tomorrow'.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A suspicious text next to a verified message with buttons for choosing a delivery slot.
  19. Side Road 19

Platform: Apple Wallet and Google Wallet

The card that pings the lock screen

    • Retention
    • Local

The side road A small app with notifications that the customer adds with one tap, with no app store and no account. The stamp on the card becomes a notification: '9/10, the next one's on us.'

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A stamp card in the phone's wallet sends a notification at the 9th stamp.
  20. Side Road 20

Platform: Gmail, Apple Mail and every inbox

The inbox row is won before the open

    • Attention
    • Retention

The side road The inbox row is decided before the email is opened. Big brands get a logo and a deal badge; most Greek emails show a grey initial. Three technical settings change how the row looks, and the DMARC that BIMI requires also stops people spoofing your domain.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
An inbox row gains a logo, a deal badge and thumbnails before the email is opened.
  21. Side Road 21

Platform: Google Shopping, Search and Maps

    The free shelf

    • Local
    • Conversion

The side road A 300-product shop in Heraklion appears in product results next to the national chains, with no ad budget. It isn't a trick, it's a setting: a clean feed, the opt-in switched on, an hourly sync.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A local shop appears in product results as 'available near you'.
  22. Side Road 22

Platform: Google Lens and Search Live

    The pack Google can read

    • Conversion

The side road When a tourist photographs your bottle at the taverna, Google should send them to you, not to a reseller. We don't control the ranking; we control the data we give it: the same photos in the feed, a GTIN and a name only you use.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
The camera recognises a bottle and points to the producer, not a reseller.
  23. Side Road 23

Platform: Google AI Mode and ChatGPT search

    The citation

    • Reach

The side road In Greek, and especially in B2B, almost nobody publishes the exact answer with real numbers. We don't fight for 'position 1'. We build the page the engine wants to quote: a direct answer, a dated table of your own data, a named author.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
An AI answer cites a page with its own data because it answers with numbers.
  24. Side Road 24

Platform: Google Hotels and Things to do

    The free booking button

    • Conversion
    • Local

The side road Most hotels in Crete already pay for a booking engine or channel manager. If it's a Google connectivity partner, the free link is often just a switch. Your own booking page sits next to the OTAs, with no commission on that click.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
The hotel's own site appears next to the OTAs, with a commission calculator.
  25. Side Road 25

    Platform: Google Business Profile (Maps)

The code that only exists on Maps

    • Local

The side road How many customers came from Maps? We put up a code that exists only there. A new one each month ('MAPS-OCT'), one button at the till logs it, and the neighbourhood bakery has its first hard number for what Maps brings in.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A code that exists only on the Maps profile is counted at the till.
  26. Side Road 26

Platform: Google Maps (Street View Studio)

    The 360° door

    • Local
    • Attention

The side road Google won't come to map your plant. You map it yourself, and it shows up on Maps. Overseas buyers, auditors and job candidates 'walk' the site before they visit.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A 360° virtual walk through a plant, with stops from the entrance to the loading docks.
  27. Side Road 27

    Platform: Google Ads (scripts)

    The weather switch

    • Conversion

The side road Ads that know the meltemi is blowing. A script that runs every hour reads the weather and the stock and switches campaigns on or off by itself. In Greece, the triggers write themselves: the meltemi, heatwaves, frost in Thessaly.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
When the wind reaches 7 Beaufort, a campaign switches itself on.
  28. Side Road 28

    Platform: Waze, through Google Ads

The pin on the driver's map

    • Local

The side road Drivers, especially professional ones, live inside navigation, not on Instagram at 3am. A roadside business with a verified location can appear as a pin near the exit. Most haven't set it up, because they think in clicks, not visits.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A business pin appears near the exit on a navigation map.
  29. Side Road 29

Platform: NFC tags (iPhone and NFC phones)

    Tap and it opens

    • Conversion
    • Retention

The side road A cheap NFC sticker turns any object into a link with no app: a table, the neck of a bottle, a machine. No camera aiming needed. You tap, it opens, and it leads to one single action.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
A phone taps a bottle and opens a page about its vineyard.
  30. Side Road 30

Platform: Parcel lockers (BOX NOW, Skroutz Point)

    The locker that brings customers

    • Local

The side road Greek e-commerce is moving collection to lockers. Whoever hosts a locker gets daily footfall paid for by someone else's logistics. Our job is the 30 seconds from the locker to your window, without touching anyone's data.

    How we'd set it up.
    Try it
People collecting parcels from the locker walk past the shop next door.

Rules of the road

We don't jump the barrier. We take the road the platform left open.

A side road passes four tests. If it fails one, it isn't a side road; it's a cliff edge, and we don't recommend it.

  1. A feature, not folklore

Behind every road there's a documented feature with a source. No 'algorithm secrets'.

  2. People choose

They download, subscribe, add, tap. No message without consent, no hidden subscription.

  3. Real people only

No bots, pods, bought followers or fake reviews. Every interaction is real.

  4. It ends in something you own

Side roads close. So each one ends in something that stays: a conversation with consent, a list, a customer in the CRM, a code at the till.

What we never do

Three roads that closed

They aren't our work. They're the reason every playbook of ours ends in something you own.

  1. Burger King, 'OK Google' (US, 2017)

The TV ad made viewers' smart speakers read out a Wikipedia entry that had been edited to favour the brand. Google stopped the devices responding shortly after launch.

A side road needs the platform on its side. A hijack gets closed.

CBS News · press report (opens in a new tab)
  2. Burger King, 'Whopper Sacrifice' (US, 2009)

An app gave a free Whopper to anyone who unfriended 10 people on Facebook, and told the unfriended. Facebook removed the notifications and the app stopped about 8 days in, after 82,771 users had dropped 233,906 friends.

Play with other people's privacy and you lose the road.

NBC News · press report (opens in a new tab)
  3. Meta Spark AR (14 January 2025)

Third-party augmented-reality effects, from brands and creators, stopped working on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger.

No campaign rests entirely on one feature. We keep the footage and the list portable.

heise · press report (opens in a new tab)

Every card carries the date it was last checked. When a feature changes or closes, the card is updated or withdrawn.
