- The fear of a bad colour outweighs the wish for a new one: losses loom larger than gains (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979). Seeing the colour on you first removes the fear before you reach the chair. Kahneman & Tversky (1979), Econometrica

Try the colour before you walk in. Shade Mirror: a hair-salon marketing idea with a live camera try-on

- Example shades. When it runs for a salon, these are its own formulas, under its own names.
- Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
The demo didn't load. The description below tells you what you'd have seen.
The demo in words: a salon mirror on the screen. If you allow it, the camera opens, a model finds your hair in every frame and recolours it inside your browser; nothing is uploaded or saved. Without the camera, you try it on one of two AI-generated portraits, whose hair masks were computed once by the same model. There are six example shades, from Copper Sunset to Cuttlefish Ink, an intensity slider, press and hold to see the before, a snapshot that stays on your device and is marked "AI recolour", and the booking button a salon would have.
A QR code in the window opens a mirror on your phone: your hair, live, in the salon's own shades and by their names. Pick one and book that exact colour.
Try it here with your camera, or on a photo if you would rather not. The model runs inside your browser.

Who it's forFor hair salons and beauty studios with a shop window and colour services.
-
A QR code in the window and a link in an Instagram Story open the try-on in the browser, using the salon's real formulas and their names.
-
The customer picks a shade and books that exact service with the stylist they want, with an optional deposit.
-
At night, the window screen loops before/afters from customers who gave written consent, alongside the QR code.
-
Retargeting by shade: "Copper Sunset is October's colour."

What to expect, honestly
We don't promise viral. We promise a mechanism you can measure.
- Try-ons that become bookings 2–6%
- Share of colour services A bigger share
most likely on a first run · A first run usually lands in the lower half of the range.
Before launch we fix one primary KPI and a control: a holdout area, off-trigger days or the previous period.Guardrails
- Face data never leaves the device.
- Not for under-16s.
- Written consent for every before/after shown in the window.
- Every AI-recoloured image is labelled (AI Act, Article 50).
- Shade-based retargeting only with cookie consent.
Who did it before us
Customers now expect to see a product on themselves before paying. The big platforms have it; a neighbourhood salon needs its own version.
Third-party results are mostly self-reported, from award entries and vendors. They show a mechanic can work, not what it will do for you.

From marketing to AI
Where the hair ends, where the defect begins.
The model that finds where hair ends and the background begins does a job called image segmentation. Trained differently, it finds where a part ends and a defect begins.
- Camera frame
- Every pixel labelled: hair or not hair
- Trained differently: part or defect
- A part passed, or held back for a person
