The demo in words: a chat with "Olive 217", the digital persona of a Koroneiki olive tree inland from Heraklion. Its first message says it is an automated persona, not a person. You tap a question (how it is today, whether it rained, tomorrow, the harvest, its age, sunrise, whether it is real) or type your own; each reply is a template written by Netex and filled with data: the typical weather for the season here, a licensed weather station when it runs for a producer. Questions about health or prices get a polite refusal, and anything it cannot measure gets "I won't guess".

A customer in Melbourne adopts one particular tree in Crete. Every week the tree writes to her: how hot it got, whether it rained, when the harvest is due. Ask it something yourself.

Here the weather is the typical weather for the season, and the replies are written by us, with gaps the data fills in. The tree adds nothing of its own.

  1. The customer adopts one specific tree: coordinates, photo, age.

  2. Field sensors (soil moisture, temperature) and weather data feed the persona.

Guardrails

  • The first message says you're talking to a digital persona (AI Act, Article 50).
  • Facts only from sensors, the grower and the lab. If it isn't measured, it isn't said.
  • No health claims from the tree. Any claims about the oil go through legal review.
  • A commercial licence for the weather data. Open-Meteo's free tier doesn't allow commercial use.
  • Consent for every channel, and one word ("stop") to end it.

Who did it before us

Adopting an olive tree isn't a new idea in Greece. A tree that writes from real data only is. Objects and animals that "reply" have worked before, and Greeks already talk to bots on Viber.

Third-party results are mostly self-reported, from award entries and vendors. They show a mechanic can work, not what it will do for you.
