February. Your name appears in the sand. Postcard From Next Summer: personal videos that win back direct hotel bookings

Gentle waves wash over and retreat from smooth wet sand in golden-hour lightThis image was created with an AI tool (AI Act, Article 50).

  • The name never leaves your device. The postcard is made in your browser.

The demo in words: you type a name and pick a date. On a video of wet sand, the name is written as if by a finger. The browser calculates Heraklion's sunset time on that day and makes a postcard with the name, date, time and a slot for a booking code.

Last July's guest opens a message from the hotel: their name written on the beach, the exact sunset time on the day they could come back, the general manager greeting them in their own language. And a code that only works on the hotel's own site.

How it got you

Postcard From Next SummerPlay → Decode → Deploy
Mechanism
Av · Personal message + Hl · Hyper-local at scale + Ch · Conversational commerce. One template becomes thousands of personal videos, and the booking happens where the message landed.
Psychology
We remember an experience by its peak and its end. The postcard replays the peak: the moment the guest picked as their favourite, on the day they left. Kahneman et al., 1993, Psychological Science · academic research
Platform signal
Opens and views inside email, WhatsApp and Viber, not a feed. Anyone who watched without booking later sees a 6-second cut-down on Instagram.
Honest range
40–70% of openers watch it; +2–6 percentage points in direct rebookings from past guests, against a generic newsletter. Typical range for a pilot in a Greek SME · Netex estimate

Deploy

How it runs, step by step

  1. At check-out, a tablet at reception asks three one-tap questions: language, favourite moment (beach, sunset, taverna, pool) and consent to "a postcard next winter".

  2. In February, a render pipeline produces a 20-second video per guest: their name in the beach sand (a sand alphabet shot once), the sunset time on the same date next year, the GM's greeting in their language, a clip of their favourite moment and a direct-only code, e.g. 8% off and late check-out.

  3. The video goes out by email and WhatsApp or Viber. The landing page plays it and opens the booking engine with last year's dates already filled in.

  4. Anyone who didn't open it gets a short SMS. Anyone who watched without booking sees a 6-second cut-down on Instagram (Custom Audience, with consent).

What to expect, honestly

We don't promise viral. We promise a mechanism you can measure.

  • Of those who open the message, watch the video 40–70%
  • Direct rebookings from past guests +2–6 percentage points against a generic newsletter
  • Room nights moved from OTAs to direct, year one 1–3% of the total

most likely on a first run · A first run usually lands in the lower half of the range.

Before launch we fix one primary KPI and a control: a holdout area, off-trigger days or the previous period.

Control: a group of past guests who get the regular newsletter instead.

Guardrails

  • Written consent from anyone whose voice is cloned, and a label on the synthetic voice.AI Act, Article 50
  • Check-out consent covers one purpose, "a postcard next winter", with a box that isn't pre-ticked.GDPR
  • WhatsApp and Viber messages only to people who asked for them, using approved templates.
  • A data check before sending: name spelling, transliteration, grammatical gender in the greeting. A person reviews the first fifty videos. One bad row across thousands of videos becomes news.
  • No fake urgency ("2 rooms left") unless it's true at that moment.
  • If the code is a discount, the lowest price of the last 30 days is shown.

Why it works

Greek hotels book just 8.7% of room nights in real time through their own site. Past guests are the audience that already knows you, and often all that's missing is a personal invitation. HOTREC, European Hotel Distribution Study 2026, via To Vima · industry body

Personal invitations have a record of filling cabins. Virgin Voyages' "Jen AI" invitations brought in more than 1,000 bookings in roughly the first month. CNBC, 2023 · company statement

The name in the sand catches the eye. The sunset time holds it: a detail so specific nobody reads it as a newsletter.

In February, last year's guest isn't on the beach. They're at their desk, four degrees outside, and the message reminds them where they were in July.

Who did it before us

Third-party results are mostly self-reported, from award entries and vendors. They show a mechanic can work, not what it will do for you.

Year Who What they did Result
2023 Virgin Voyages, "Jen AI" Users built a personal cruise invitation "from" Jennifer Lopez and sent it to friends. More than 1,000 bookings in roughly the first month. company statement source (opens in a new tab)
2021 Lay's, "Messi Messages" A personal video message "from Messi" in 10 languages. 300,000+ messages, 3.53 minutes average time on site. self-reported source (opens in a new tab)

2022 Zomato (India) Thousands of AI-made local versions of one ad. One version called a temple a "restaurant". Public backlash. The lesson: data QA before scale. press report source (opens in a new tab)

The other hemisphere

One postcard is creative. Three thousand is a data pipeline.

Names from the PMS, consents, languages, dates, codes, a render queue, sending, bounces. We build that part as automation: the data flows out by itself, the videos render by themselves, and a person approves the first fifty before anything goes out.
